The Best Exfoliators for Every Skin Concern

Exfoliation is the fast track to softer, clearer, more even looking skin.

As the peel master himself Dr. Dennis Gross explains: “Our skin naturally turns over and it has a cycle where it reproduces itself every 28 days but sitting on the top layer of your skin is a dead skin cell layer,”

These dead skin cells mixed with oil, dirt and other debris can lead to congestion and blemishes, which is why exfoliation is key in dealing with uneven texture and/or breakout-prone skin. But exfoliation, as Dr. Dennis tells us, is crucial for all skin types and concerns. Not only does skin look more radiant post-peel but your other serums and treatments will have an easier time absorbing into the skin, allowing you to reap all their benefits.

And lucky for us (and our skin barriers) we’ve come a long way since a certain stone fruit adjacent scrub was the only way to exfoliate our skin. While all exfoliators work towards the same goal, each works in slightly different ways making them more suitable for different skin. The key is to pick the right exfoliator for your concern, whether that be dehydration, ageing, pigmentation or even sensitivity.

Here are our top peels and exfoliators for each skin concern...

Breakup with blemishes with this targeted daily exfoliator, designed to clear congested pores, regulate oil production and nourish your barrier. Clarifying salicylic acid works like a vacuum, helping cleanse your pores from the inside out, while three AHAs smooth texture and prevent congestion-causing buildup on the skins surface. But this potent solution contains more than just exfoliants, targeted antibacterial agent, farnesol, helps inhibit acne-causing bacteria, hyaluronic acid hydrates and antioxidant-rich turmeric soothes your complexion. This rounded approach not only helps clear breakouts, but also works to calm and protect skin, helping prevent future blemishes.

Your glowiest complexion awaits with this twice weekly treatment, inspired by Kate Somerville’s Hollywood-approved in-clinic facials. The unique formula combines all three types of exfoliation to target uneven texture and boost radiance. Chemical exfoliators, lactic and salicylic acid dissolve the bond between dead skin cells, before physical granules gently buff them away. Finally, fruit enzymes work to ‘digest’ any remaining debris. Whether you’re prepping skin before makeup or working to even rough, bumpy skin, this resurfacing exfoliator is an essential in your routine.

For pigmentation
Alpha-H Liquid Gold + Vitamin C

Brighten dark spots and restore radiance with this supercharged blend. Exfoliating glycolic acid accelerates cell turnover, resurfacing the skin by sloughing away dead skin cells to reveal a smoother, more even-looking complexion. In this treatment, the AHA also helps clear the way and improve skin’s ability to absorb vitamin C. This antioxidant doesn’t just fade existing dark spots, it can also help prevent new ones from forming by slowing the cause of pigmentation, excessive melanin production.

Powered by hydrating lactic acid, this cult-favourite treatment serum is especially well-suited to dehydrated skin. Not only does lactic acid gently dissolves dead skin cells to refine skin texture, it also helps lock in moisture by stimulating the production of barrier-boosting ceramides. Layer this serum under your favourite moisturiser for a radiant, plumper, more even complexion.

Just because your skin is prone to irritation, doesn’t mean you need to skip exfoliation altogether. Enzymatic exfoliators only target skin that’s ready to shed, making them a gentler alternative to chemical peels or physical scrubs. Tatcha’s water-activated Rice Polish goes from powder to gentle foam and uses Japanese Rice Bran to gently polishing away dead skin without ever being abrasive or rough to skin. Plus, calming ingredients like Japanese indigo and colloidal oatmeal soothe skin, leaving it smoother and brighter never tight or irritated.

Consider this 2-step peel a one-and-done approach to smoother, firmer-looking skin. Packed with AHAs and BHAs, step one gently exfoliates dead skin cells to boost collagen production, increase cell turnover, and improve overall texture. The antioxidant-rich step two neutralises those acids, helping protect against environmental stressors while also delivering a dose of retinol to speed up cell turnover and improve elasticity.

But, as Dr. Dennis himself explains, it’s not just a powerful ingredient list that makes this peel effective at treating signs of ageing: “When you go from step one to step two, there’s a pH fluctuation that takes the collagen you already have and puts it into a more pristine shape and structure,” resulting in plumper, smoother, younger-looking skin.
