It’s New. In July. At MECCA

Words by Kerri Gordon

Between defending Benson Boone’s backflips online and waiting for the new Lorde album to drop, I’ve managed to squeeze in some very important beauty testing. The verdict? This month’s newness is looking extremely promising. Here’s everything worth knowing about.

Breaking beauty news

The decision to offer at-home hair tinting solutions is not one MECCA has taken lightly. In fact, it’s taken us 28 years. There was no chance we’d put you at risk of a bad box dye, which is where Josh Wood comes in. Known as a ‘genius’ when it comes to colouring, Josh has bottled his expertise, totally revolutionising the category to allow everyone to create personalised, glossy colour wherever they are. This is box dye you needn’t be afraid of.

ICYMI (though I doubt you did) Charlotte Tilbury popped into MECCA last month to lead the world’s biggest makeup masterclass. No biggie. She left us with a parting gift, her new Unreal Blush Healthy Glow Sticks – and they’re as good as the reviews suggest. I’m loving the shade ‘Pretty Glow’, a unique cool-toned pinky-lilac missing from my collection.

Muse Hard Launch

If you’ve been in my periphery at some point this year, you’ll know that since the final piece of confetti landed at Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism tour, I’ve been on a journey to be more Dua. I work out more – and harder – I've consumed many a Hector’s Deli sandwich (which totally contradicts the workout thing) and I’ve been locked into Katie Jane Hughes’ makeup methodologies (yes, I prime my brush). Dua is also the face of YSL Beauty, so you can bet I’ll be first in line to shop the brand’s new Loveshine Gloss; a super hydrating, oil-infused lip gloss that delivers satisfyingly plump, juicy lips in a single swipe. Training season’s over, friends. I’m one step closer to a total Dua-over.

While I can’t say the same for Materialists, there’s no denying its star, global hair muse Dakota Johnson, has strands worthy of five stars. Effortless, swoopy bangs that look perfect no matter which way the wind blows? Unheard of. After getting home from the cinema and deleting my last remaining dating apps, I got to work in my bathroom mirror, hacking at my outgrown fringe in pursuit of a Dakota ‘do. Because the secret to bangs like hers isn’t always the cut – it's the zhuzh. Good bangs crave texture, weightless grit, and as little grease as possible. Or, dry shampoo. I’ve long been an antagonist of the category, but that all changed when I tried Crown Affair’s The Dry Shampoo – a brush-and-powder system that absorbs oil and adds root lift to the best of effects.

Texture fiend

In my 10 years of beauty, I’ve watched eastern skincare rituals influence and transform the western beauty market over. You can see it in the texture of your new favourite skincare formulas. Milks, jellies, balms, clouds; you name it.

My personal favourite has been the milk; opaque but emollient liquids that skin slurps up. Lighter than a moisturiser, richer than an essence, every bit hydrating. I reach for milks as my summer moisturiser; so you can bet Tatcha’s new skin-balancing The Dewy Milk Moisturiser and MECCA MAX’s MILK IT Soothing Moisture Mist are coming with me to Europe.

Then, there’s the beauty balm. When I was first getting into makeup, BB creams were the latest innovation to hit the market – and they’re having a resurgence. 15 years ago, they were thick, claggy and came in two unforgiving shades. Today, Dr Jart+’s niacinamide-infused tint has a flexible, skin-enhancing formula that leaves the ultimate your-skin-but-better effect. A culted K-Beauty favourite (and my bet for the next viral beauty icon) it hydrates, evens, lightly conceals and adjusts to your skin tone.

Fruity beauty

This foodie trend has serious legs. We started with salad scents in 2023, skipped mains and went straight into dessert in 2024, and this year, it’s all about fresh cut fruit. So much so, this month we’re seeing a raspberry ripple perfume from Jo Malone London, a cherry-scented cleansing balm from Elemis, and guava lip balms and EDPs from Summer Fridays and Ellis Brooklyn, respectively.

If you’re not fruit forward, may I interest you in its floral cousin, orange blossom? Glossier’s Orange Blossom Neroli Body Spritz is sweet, spritely and uplifting, without being overly edible. A true delight!
