Warm Up Your Winter With These Toasty Scents

Words by Danielle Gay

Winter is here, which means it’s time for a seasonal refresh – and the same goes for our fragrance wardrobes.

As the temperature drops, scents turn bolder and richer, while the winter air calls for a shift in how to wear and apply these more intense concoctions. To mark the season, we’ve curated an edit of the best winter fragrances to add to your rotation.

Wrap yourself in these cosy scents – fireplace, optional!

What Makes a Fragrance a Winter Scent?

A good winter fragrance is richer, warmer and more ’weighty‘ than your usual scent; think strong base notes like resins, spices, musk and oud – anything with a bolder profile that won’t evaporate or fade in the winter chill. Fragrance families to consider when the mercury drops include woods, gourmands and ambers, which linger on the skin (and clothes) long after they’ve been sprayed.

Rest assured, there’s no need to completely change your fragrance wardrobe come winter – a little layering goes a long way. Lovers of floral scents can simply trade in lighter top notes for warm accords like amber or musk, while those who wear citrus should look to ground brighter compositions with spice for a winter-ready aroma. If you usually gravitate towards skin-forward scents, reach for creamy gourmands or smoulder with a smoky base.

And if you love gourmands? It’s your time to shine! The science says their dense, resinous bases perform better in the cold – trade your tropical favourites for rich, edible notes like vanilla, tonka, praline or caramel, and prepare for them to last even longer.

How to Wear Perfume in Winter

The bad news? Cold air compresses scent molecules, meaning fragrances don’t project as far during the winter months. In other words: alongside opting for stronger base notes, your application method needs a rethink. Winter dressing reveals less skin, so concentrate on applying perfume to the pulse points that remain exposed, like the neck and wrists.

Before heading out the door, put your winter wardrobe to work by spraying perfume directly on wool coats or knitted scarves – this will trap and carry the scent. Finish with an extra spritz on beanies, headbands, hoods or head coverings.

Pro tip: make layering your priority. Invest in fragranced body lotions, hair mists or all-over scented oils to deepen the scent profile and prolong the wear of your new winter aroma.

One for the rose lovers, Up At Dawn smells like strolling in an English garden in the cool mist of the morning, thanks to moody notes of spiced pink pepper and earthy moss. Think of it as a grown-up version of a classic rose fragrance, with deeper, skin-warming accords that get better over time (and still smell good when you’ve been up all night long).

The perfect trio for scent layering, Tsu Lange Yor‘s EDP trio combines Fig (warm autumn fruits), Orange Grove (bitter orange, blackcurrant and cedar evoke a damp forest floor) and Tomato (as if grown in the heat of a greenhouse). Wear together for the ultimate sillage, unfolding like a walk through a rain-soaked winter garden.

Inspired by the intensity of a Damascus plum, Yvonne is at once warm and tart, making it surprisingly addictive. Go straight to the pulse points of the wrists and neck with this opulent fragrance, where it will dry down to a liquorice edge with long-lasting depth.

Aptly described by MECCA fragrance experts as a ’nightcap in an aristocrat’s library’, Cognac Reign conjures up a boozy fireside rendezvous. Full of rich notes of dark liquor, antique wood and crème brûlée, you’ll want to douse yourself in a spritz of this and wait out the winter.

The Francis Kurkdjian take on oud calls for a violet accord, a dash of heady Damascena rose and an alluring hit of vanilla. It’s the kind of fragrance you’ll want to wear to a glamorous winter soirée, worn on the skin like a velvety-rich fabric.

Heated resins reveal a balsamic note in Tom Ford’s Figue Erotique, which is a wintery take on a fruity gourmand. Ripe fig is enveloped in a muscovado accord, giving it a deep, almost intoxicating sweetness that is so sultry you’ll want to wear it with caution around admirers!
