It’s Acne-Fighting. It’s Collagen-Boosting. It’s the DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro. And It’s Back

Heralded as the rose gold standard in skincare tools, the legendary DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro LED Mask has been the centrepiece in some very important cultural moments.

It features in Paris Hilton’s night-time skincare routine, has made an appearance on multiple celebrity Instagram accounts (see: this) and, most recently, was worn by Julianne Moore’s army of glamorous minions in an episode of the Netflix hit Sirens.

It’s the LED staple of many a Hollywood beauty routine, with those lucky enough to own one often proselytising about its collagen-boosting skin benefits. And like any good A-lister (looking at you, Dua Lipa), Dr. Dennis Gross’ cult-favourite LED mask recently took a holiday from the MECCA spotlight – but now, it’s back. Ready to get reacquainted?

What does the DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro do?

In short, it’s a beauty tool that means serious business. A true skincare superhero, the DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro fights acne, smooths wrinkles, calms redness and boosts collagen. Featuring a combination of up to 100 LED lights, the mask emits red and blue wavelengths: the blue works to minimise acne-causing bacteria, while the red builds collagen to power up your skin’s bounce.

Similarly to other topical ingredients like vitamin C, our skin cells have unique receptors that respond to LED lights. The red lights, for example, target cells in the skin called fibroblast, which are responsible for producing collagen. When you use the DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro, the red lights activate the fibroblast’s mitochondria (the ‘powerhouse’ of the cell) to stimulate the skin to make more of its own collagen.

The blue LED lights work a little differently. Targeting the surface of the skin – unlike the deeper-penetrating red lights – the blue light wavelengths have an antimicrobial effect, making them effective at killing acne-causing bacteria before blemishes happen.

How do I use it?

It’s a three-minute miracle! After cleansing, place it over your face and secure the strap comfortably around your head. Just press and hold the power button to turn it on and choose your light setting (you can choose between red, blue or a combination of both).

During this time, you can read a book, take a power nap, ponder, rearrange your top shelf, sip the beverage of your choice (through a straw) or listen to your favourite podcast. It automatically shuts off after three minutes, so feel free to get carried away. Follow with your regular skincare routine.

How often should I use it?

It’s totally up to you! If you’re using the mask for the first time, you might want to start with three to four times a week, working you way up to the recommended three minutes a day. The best time to use it is right after cleansing your face – whether that’s a morning or night ritual is a matter of personal preference. If you are using it in the morning, always follow with SPF (but you do that already, right? Right?!).

Which setting is right for my skin?

It’s simple: just choose the setting that best aligns with your skincare goals. For collagen-boosting, fine line-smoothing results, click the button once for red lights. If it’s acne-fighting you’re after, click the button twice for blue lights. For a combination of both, click three times. Experiment with each and see which setting you like best!
