How 10 Niche Beauty Discoveries Became MECCA’s Bestsellers

When MECCA Cosmetica first opened its doors on Toorak Road in 1997, it was home to seven carefully curated brands.

Some, customers had been eagerly waiting to get their hands on, and others, lesser known in the Australian market. What they lacked in virality (it was the ‘90s, after all), they made up for in performance – and potential. All they needed was a little love and generous swatching, which our store team happily provided in spades. 

At risk of sounding a little horn-tooting, we've always had a knack for spotting the next big beauty thing. Through makeup applications, countless sample pots, impromptu product demonstrations and emphatic testimonials, our team of trained makeup artists and skin specialists have been able to share the magic of their under-the-radar favourites with anyone who will listen (just ask us about our favourite mascara! Please!). 

From early icons like Stila and NARS to the little-known brands our buying teams have travelled the world to find, we love nothing more than sharing the beauty we love – in-store, in writing and importantly, in Beauty Loop Boxes. Here, our tenured team share 10 of the products they’ve believed in from the very beginning.

 

“This hidden gem landed in only a few stores originally,” says Customer Education Manager Francesca Hyde, who’s been at MECCA for 11 years. “Rumours of the best moisturiser ever quickly started circulating. Before it landed in our store, we would make the pilgrimage across town to check out the most exquisite, buttery texture that has ever existed.” 

“This hype we built around this product truly came from our passion for the texture, and our love of the founder's totally unique approach to anti-inflammatory ingredients... It was the start of a gentler, but still highly effective approach to skincare.”

After almost 26 years of feedback from countless SPF-wearing customers, MECCA COSMETICA created a formula that captured exactly what people were looking for in suncare. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for To Save Face to become a staple in every MECCA beauty bag.   

A far cry from the thick, ghostly creams of the past, To Save Face SPF50+ Superscreen is a formula that will convert even the SPF-averse. Lightweight, hydrating, and fast absorbing, it layers seamlessly under makeup and never leaves a white cast.

“Before I started working at MECCA, I was always in awe of the team’s skin: glowing and smooth,” Francesca explains. “During my induction, I got to try Dr. Dennis Gross’ transformative Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel for the very first time and was told, ‘This is the trick to glowing ‘MECCA skin’.’”   

With five AHAs and BHAs, retinol and soothing chamomile extract, it’s a shortcut to clearer, brighter skin. “Once you try a peel pad, there's no going back,” Francesca says. “The glass-skin effect is so addictive, and one treatment means committing to the two-step system for life.”

When Stila’s One-Step Correct landed at MECCA back in 2010, it was truly ahead of its time. Not only did it look different (that swirl of colour is mesmerising), but it performed differently, too -- delivering instant colour correction and brightening in one step. More than just a primer, this multitasker quickly became a go-to for store teams during makeup applications. The best part? It looks just as great on its own as it does under foundation, making it a favourite for those wanting a natural, no-makeup makeup look.

“A full in-store shift and your mascara staying in place don't often go hand in hand,” Francesca explains. "There were only a few formulas we trusted to make it through a full day, and Kevyn Aucoin’s Volume Mascara was one of them! The original tubing mascara, the clump-free formula stays locked on through even the longest days in store. It was my answer to every customer who came in looking to avoid the dreaded ‘panda eyes’.”

“This went from being a backstage makeup-artist secret to the foundation every beauty lover has in their makeup bag,” says Stephanie Coco, a Makeup Education Cadet with over nine years of experience working on the MECCA shop floor. “It was always our go-to in-store because of the inclusive shade range (it launched with 40 shades), so we knew we would always find a match. The formula is so versatile, and you can build from sheer to full coverage effortlessly – Sheer Glow will always look and feel like skin,” she continues.

When Sol de Janeiro first launched at MECCA back in 2016, the now-iconic Bum Bum Cream wasn’t the body care juggernaut it is today. Once it hit our shelves, store teams quickly became obsessed, slathering on the addictive, salted caramel, vanilla and pistachio-scented cream at every chance they got. By 2017, the ‘Bum Bum scent’ (which we now know as Cheirosa 62) had become the unofficial fragrance of MECCA HQ, and our enthusiastic team was eager to tell everyone about this delicious new discovery. Fast forward to today, one Bum Bum Cream is sold every four seconds – and yes, we’re still some of its biggest fans.

When MECCA MAX’s Pout Pencils first arrived in 2020, Stephanie remembers the shade ‘Classy’ becoming an instant in-store hit (you know, the one that recently went viral for being the perfect nude?). “An essential to every MECCA artist’s kit and our personal makeup bags, these lip liners redefined affordable luxury, delivering high-performance quality without the premium price tag. With a formula that's both reliable and long-lasting, Pout Pencils quickly became a go-to for customers wanting to try new lip shades without the commitment.”

“When we first heard we were launching Westman Atelier, we were so excited to have Gucci Westman's iconic products at MECCA,” Francesca says. “Her artistry is such a point of inspiration for us in-store. While we instantly fell in love with Baby Cheeks' buildable, skin-loving formulas, customers fell in love with how versatile and easy they were to use. Baby Cheeks was the first product to make blush luxurious. The product, the packaging, the application... no notes.”

Not to be that person, but Baccarat Rouge 540 had lived on MECCA shelves for almost five years before becoming the scent of 2021 (and beyond). Created by masterful perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, the inimitable blend of amber, jasmine and cedarwood was one of a few fragrances we stocked from the ‘if you know you know’ French fragrance house – and a forever favourite amongst our scent-obsessed store team.
