Research from Brown University found that the scents we experience as newborns hold the strongest power of emotional recall. These early scent memories are imprinted in the brain, forming a blueprint for comfort that lasts a lifetime. We are naturally drawn to gourmand notes like vanilla and tonka bean because they share compounds found in milk and childhood sweets. They remind the body of when things were simple, good, and safe.

In one study, patients exposed to gourmand scents during MRI scans reported 63% less anxiety compared to those exposed to neutral scents (PubMed, 1994). Another study showed these same notes can activate the brain’s reward centre, triggering the release of dopamine, the neurotransmitter linked to pleasure and calm (PMC5742189).
