Beauty packaging is an intricate combination of practicality and beauty, with complex designs made from a mix of materials, including plastic, paper, glass and more. This, along with its smaller size, can make beauty waste difficult to recycle. Often, mainstream recyclers don’t have the capacity to dissemble and separate the components – making it inappropriate for kerbside recycling.
While we're working with our brands to design products and packaging based on ‘circular economy’ principles (which means designing products to reduce waste and pollution, keep them in use for as long as possible, and preserve natural resources), we’ve partnered with TerraCycle® to provide an alternative for our customers looking to sustainably dispose of beauty empties.
Now in its fourth year, this program continues to grow in popularity – and impact. Every year, we divert approximately 30,000kg of empty beauty waste that would have otherwise ended up in landfill (that’s over 415,000 empties!).
And, in an Australian first, we worked with TerraCycle to use this returned waste to create the beautiful TerraCycle® bins that you’ll find in all our stores! Not only are the bins part of the ‘circular economy’, but their eye-catching design means you can't miss them when you're looking for them in-store.
