Method 01: Don't Wait for the Green Light
Nobody's coming to wave you through. Start before you're ready, before it's perfect, before anyone tells you it's a good idea. Inspiration doesn't arrive as a lightning bolt before you begin; it's what shows up once you do.
"Think of a unicorn. Think of a flower. Think of it in reverse. Change the colour, change the shape. Times it by ten, times it by a thousand."
– Jack River, Singer-Songwriter

Method 02: Choose Feeling Before Reason
Logic will get you somewhere sensible. Instinct will get you somewhere interesting. The things that actually move people – that stay with them – almost never came from the obvious place. If it feels uncomfortable, you’re getting warmer.
“Move to the heart. Stay open to hear the world. Pay attention to your dreams.”
– Elise Loehnen, Writer

Method 03: Make Mess Your Method
Mess is the process, not a detour. Step sideways. Mix things that don’t belong together. Mess is not a problem to solve – it’s where the good stuff lives. Go rogue. Get it wrong – right is overrated!
“Who cares if it isn’t pretty? Get dirty. Never worry about making mistakes.”
– Gabriel Weston, Surgeon & Author

Method 04: Switch Off to Switch On
Your best thinking won't come from a screen. The best version of you isn't filtered or generated. Walk without your phone. Get genuinely, gloriously lost. To paraphrase Picasso, “Inspiration has to find you walking.” Wandering is where ideas are born.
“Notice nature; it holds all the answers. Tune in to it.”
– Linda Hewson, Creative Director & Strategist

Method 05: Be the Magpie
Collect. Notice obsessively. Gather what delights you with zero justification – your taste is data and your instinct is intelligence. The connections you make between unrelated things? That's creativity. No algorithm can join the same dots you can.
“Collect and collate with your wonderful instinct.”
– Emily Nolan, Founder & Designer, E NOLAN

Method 06: Ask Why, Then Ask Again
A four-year-old asks almost 400 questions a day. Curiosity isn’t childish, it’s a superpower we unlearn. Ask open-ended questions. Ask questions that feel polar: What if I had $1 to make this? What if I had $1 million instead? What if I had all the time in the world? What if I had no time at all? Questions stretch your thinking in ways answers never can.
“Ask as many questions about the world as you like. Don’t hold back.”
– Linda Hewson, Creative Director & Strategist

Method 07: Wear Your Imperfections
Imperfection is not a mistake in the work – it's proof that a human made it! The wobble in the line, the crack in the glaze, the stumble in the speech. These aren’t things to smooth over; they’re your signature. Individuality lives in the details.
“You don’t have to fit into one box. The world needs people brave enough to be different.”
– Dr Ariella Heffernan-Marks, Founder & CEO, Ovum AI

Method 08: Use Your Hands
Your hands are your oldest tools – create with them! Sketch, cook, build, grow, sew. Tear something apart and put it back together differently. There’s a knowing that only comes through touch, through holding something real. In a world that asks you to keep clicking, making something with your body is radical.
“You are God (she is a woman).”

Method 09: Put the Next Pearl on the String
Creativity isn’t a destination, and the more you fixate on the result, the harder it becomes to move. Don’t wait until it’s good enough, just keep going. One thing, then the next. A sketch, a sentence, an idea scribbled down before it’s ready. Psychiatrist Phil Stutz calls this ‘the string of pearls’; each small act of making is a pearl on a string. Each one has value. Keep adding.
“Keep making things, big and small, mundane and profound. You will always find yourself there.”
– Elise Loehnen, Writer

Method 10: Silence the Inner Critic
The wrong answer reveals something the right answer doesn’t. The voice that says: not yet, not good enough, not you – that voice isn’t wisdom, it’s noise. Turn it down, keep going, see what's on the other side.
“No two people even have the same fingerprint, much less life path.”
– Elise Loehnen, Writer
