Fashion runways. Red carpets of primetime award shows. Informing the creative direction and products of artistry brand Stila. The life of New York-based makeup artist Charlie Riddle is full of glitz, glamour and star-studded moments.

He is the makeup artist behind Brittany Snow’s glistening, old-Hollywood glam debut at the 2025 MTV VMAs, has crafted flawless looks for the likes of Jessica Alba, Ayo Edebiri and Shailene Woodley, and can be spotted on movie press tours with Brad Pitt and Ines de Ramon. As if that wasn’t enough for Riddle’s overflowing portfolio, he’s been hustling behind the scenes of the long-awaited The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (coming to cinemas in Australia on 19 November), developing a fantastical, whimsical Stila collection inspired by the film.

While an early screening of the big blockbuster film wasn’t on the cards for us (sadly!), Riddle was able to give us his intel on all things celebrity, Stila and the film’s beauty trends you can now try at home.

How Charlie Riddle Got His Beauty Start

Known for a wide spectrum of work – from high-glam to subtle ‘clean-girl’ – Riddle doesn’t box himself into a set style, believing the “great, sweet spot” is variety. But if you put a magnifying glass to his work, you will notice an obvious throughline: his skin-forward approach to makeup.

“When I was a teenager, I had terrible skin and was always looking for something to cover and treat and fix,” Riddle tells The MECCA Memo. “So, at that point, I had a hyper fixation on skincare and all things skin, and so I wanted to be a dermatologist. I even went to school for medical aesthetics, but during the course, I took a three-day makeup course. The moment I picked up a brush, it was instantly relaxing, like I was painting. My passion for skincare still comes through when I do makeup, though, as it’s always skin forward. If the skin isn’t right, nothing else can be right for me.”

As for how to achieve that signature, celebrity-adored skin-like finish? Riddle says: “First and foremost, you need to understand your skin type – whether you’re oily or dry – and what products are going to work for your skin. Then you need a pause between your skin prep and makeup. I really like to let everything soak in and sit for like 10 to 15 minutes. Often, I’ll use a facial machine to help depuff, or I’ll do the brows before going in with foundation. I think it helps everything blend more seamlessly because it lets the hydration really lock in.

“For foundation, I work in sheer layers so I can keep the skin shining through as much as possible. I’ll apply a sheer layer first, then maybe build the eyes or a little bit of the lips, and then maybe go back in and add a little more. I’ll also apply everything to the back of my hand, warming it to the skin before wiping any excess off the brush, and then I’m pretty aggressive with buffing the foundation in.”

Putting Stila Back on the Beauty Map

As Stila’s current Global Beauty Director and Head of Artistry since 2021, Riddle’s connection to the legacy artistry brand started 12 years earlier. “Stila is actually where I got into my backstage roots of assisting on runway shows,” Riddle says. “This then slowly turned into a role of working more closely with product development, packaging, creative and doing the campaigns alongside the marketing department. The brand was missing having an artist’s voice a little bit, so they brought me in and wanted my eyes on everything.

“It was really nice because it felt like I could really help with letting them know what I would want in my kit and what products work for me and for everyone else. To me, Stila always feels modern, timeless and approachable, and that’s how I view the style of makeup that I do, too.”

“Since 2021, it’s been full speed ahead,” he says proudly. “I love what Stila stands for as an artistry brand, and, for me, Stila has never felt unapproachable. It always has a little bit of whimsy, is full of beauty secrets, and is a very multi-use brand.”

Stila Is Selected as Beauty Partner!

As for Stila’s biggest secret: they are the official makeup partner for Lionsgate’s highly anticipated film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The collaboration began when the film’s Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics Designer, Natalie MacGowan Spencer, specifically requested Stila products for the characters. This collaboration also brings a highly collectable, limited-edition Stila beauty collection.

“This was the most exciting thing Stila has done in many, many years,” Riddle says, as a self-proclaimed fan of the films. “I think sometimes we get a little bit overlooked as a brand, so we knew this was something we just had to do.

“Our collaboration came in early, from seeing the mood boards, to having calls to discuss what was needed from a product standpoint and even getting to do an early read of the script,” Riddle adds, remaining coy about the details – so yes, you’ll have to wait until the movie’s release for the spoilers. “Getting this access really helped shape how we approached the collaboration. We removed some products from the lineup, quickly added some back in, and even had to fast-track product development based on the script and what would really set the tone. It was such a fun process and truly a collab – we weren’t just slapping the name Stila on it.”

As for the collection, there’ll be a Sunrise Eyes™, All Fire™, Meadow Dream, Pretty Striking and Rebel Beauty – so are you ready to channel your inner Effie (aren’t we all!)?

“When you see the full collection, you’ll definitely notice the fun pops, the rainbow, a glitter blue and a bold red lip, but there are also so many beautiful neutrals,” Riddle says. “We have this beautiful new Heaven’s Hue Highlighter in Rosy Dream, which is like a blush/highlighter hybrid, and it looks gorgeous on everyone. The Heaven’s Dew™ All Over Glimmer in 'Rainbow' has always been a dream of mine, because I’ve always wanted a rainbow, transparent topcoat that could go over anything. Also, there’s a new Kajal liner – and as we know, Stila is known for our liners because they’re such a great formula and an everyday wear.

“For people wanting to try an element of whimsy or fun, there’s Proserpina and Effie shades in the Sunrise Eyes™, but then it’s also okay if you want to stick to the Meadow Dream and have a little bit of a rosy cheek and mascara look – either way you’re still living in the world of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.”

The Extra Beauty Products Everyone Needs – Riddle Insists!

While the Stila x The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping collection is a given, we asked Riddle to spill on his three beauty bag must-haves. “My three favourite products would be Stila’s Kitten Heaven’s Hue Highlighter – it looks good on everyone, and you can use it on the eyes, body or cheeks and for bridal or red-carpet makeup. It’s gorgeous. Another must-have for me is the Stila Stay All Day® Smudge & Set Waterproof Gel Eye Liners. I was in the lab working on these, and so they’re like a baby of mine. I use them on almost everyone because I know once it locks in, it won’t move. Thirdly, a really good lip mask – I do love the MECCA one. I even let an overnight one sit on the client’s lips while I’m prepping, as I hate when lips look dry on a red carpet, so I’m keeping them super hydrated always.”
