Words by The MECCA Memo

By far the question we get asked most often, both in-store and online, is: what is the best moisturiser at MECCA?

It’s a hard one for us to answer, too. We have hundreds of formulas that we really, truly believe in. As MECCA’s skin expert, Lucy, explains, the best moisturiser for you is the one that suits your skin type and addresses your skin concerns.

“Everyone has such individual needs and preferences when it comes to their skin… You should think about what a moisturiser does for your skin, the texture and the consistency,” she explains.

Before you dive into our skincare aisles, you ned to know how your skin type plays a part in choosing the right formula and the ingredients to look out for. Firstly, in moisturisers, Lucy says there are three main ingredients: “Humectants draw moisture into the skin to replenish what's been lost, emollients soften and smooth, and occlusives lock it all in to keep your skin hydrated for longer.”

For oilier skin types, Lucy points to lightweight gel formulas that refresh the skin with hyaluronic acid and squalane. At the other end of the spectrum sit rich, buttery formulations full of nourishing oils, best suited for dry or mature skin types. “Look for barrier supporting ingredients like ceramides, fatty acids and lightweight oils,” she adds.

Meanwhile, if you’re battling particular skin concerns like sensitivity, breakouts, signs of ageing, dehydration, uneven texture and pigmentation, it can feel impossible to figure out which moisturiser is best for you.

To make it easier than ever for you to find your formula, Lucy's here to share her wealth of skincare knowledge to help you discover a moisturiser that ticks every box for your skin.

Best Moisturiser for Oily Skin: Tatcha Dewy Milk Moisturizer

If rich, thick creams leave your skin looking shiny and slick, this lightweight alternative to Tatcha’s bestselling Dewy Skin Cream is your ideal option. It uses zinc hyaluronate to strengthen the skin barrier and balance excess oil, alongside prebiotic green tea extract to support a healthy microbiome and Japanese purple rice extract for added hydration. Don’t underestimate the power of this weightless milk – it might sink in instantly, but it leaves behind a fresh, bouncy glow that lasts without being greasy.

Best Moisturiser for Dry or Dehydrated Skin: Facile Beyond There Ultra-Hydrating Cream

Dehydrated skin drinks up rich, emollient moisturisers that lock in oils and hydration, and keep skin nourished throughout the day. This dermatologist-developed cream from Facile has just the right balm-like texture (it’s not too heavy) and is enriched with ceramides to deeply moisturise and promote smoother, firmer skin, hyaluronic acid for hydration and a blend of essential fatty acids to support a stronger skin barrier. If you’re on the sensitive side, you’ll also appreciate the lack of fragrance.

Best Moisturiser for Signs of Ageing: ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Marine Cream Ultra-Rich

The most effective creams for mature skin are those with a serum mentality – flooding the skin with potent actives that target the signs of ageing: dryness, dullness, fine lines, texture and loss of volume. In this case, ELEMIS uses a marine algae complex which has been fermented to enhance its ability to hydrate, visibly firm and help protect the skin, alongside the emollient cocoa butter to reduce moisture loss and reduce the look of fine lines immediately.

Best Moisturiser for Pigmentation: Emma Lewisham Supernatural Day Crème

For your most even and radiant complexion yet, Emma Lewisham’s beloved moisturiser works hard with a combination of triple vitamin C – the antioxidant known for its ability to brighten and fade dark spots – with saccharide isomerate and hyaluronic acid to deliver supercharged hydration, plus wild indigo extract (a calming neuropeptide) to visibly improve skin tone. It all adds up to bright, plump skin and a noticeable reduction in the appearance of pigmentation. Note: SPF is always a must, but especially when you’re using this.

Best Moisturiser for Breakout-Prone Skin: Summer Fridays Cloud Dew® Gel Cream Moisturizer

The rule of thumb when it comes to oily skin struggling with congestion? Hydration over moisturisation. Choose a gel-textured or oil-free cream to replenish skin without the risk of clogging your pores; this one from Summer Fridays meets the brief – and even helps prevent future blemishes from forming by regulating oil production. Pineapple enzymes polish your complexion by gently dissolving those pesky, pore-clogging dead skin cells, while three weights of hyaluronic acid serve up a plumping dose of hydration. Use morning and night for glowier skin that’s visibly smoother.

Best Moisturiser for Sensitive Skin: Cosmetics 27 Baume 27 Advanced Formula

‘Restore’ and ‘recover’ are the two words to look out for when choosing a moisturiser for sensitive skin. Tasked with soothing redness and irritation, while supporting a compromised skin barrier, Baume 27 is one of MECCA’s most coveted solutions. It instantly relieves signs of a stressed complexion and works to strengthen skin from within. The brand’s signature Centella asiatica complex, CICA-MA2®, sits at the heart of its formula. Try it, and you’ll see why it’s on high rotation for so many MECCA Skin Specialists.

For All Skin Types: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream

It's estimated that one tub of this wonder cream is sold every six seconds worldwide, and if that isn’t enough to win you over, they also put it to the test on a five-person team ascending Greenland’s icy peaks – who, on return, claimed their skin stayed "well-hydrated" despite the perilous conditions. For a formula with such miraculous hydrating abilities (thanks to avocado oil, squalane and a unique glacial glycoprotein), it’s remarkably lightweight and free from the ingredients commonly known to irritate skin. And while mountain climbing might not be part of your every day, at least you know your complexion can face whatever the weather throws at it!
